Free Market Zine

A background of different pieces of black, gray, white, and green paper and a photo of someone mending clothes. On the top right corner is the OPIRG Peterborough logo. The text overtop reads: “Submit your work to the Free Market Zine. Tell us how you subvert capitalism and nurture sustainability.”

Do you like to create sustainable fashion? Are you good at reusing old things to create new ones? Do you have creative ways of reducing your consumption of everyday items? Share it with us in our new Free Market Zine! Submissions do not need to be about clothes, they just need to support the mission of the Free Market which is to subvert capitalism, nurture sustainability, reduce waste, and promote environmental awareness!

What we’re looking for:

  • Photo submissions of your DIYs, upcycling/sewing projects or anything cool you’ve created from something old! Doesn’t need to be clothes!
  • Written pieces – anything from reasons to why you choose to upcycle to step-by-step instructions on how to create something cool!

How to enter Written Submissions:

  • Write a short piece about anything relating to sustainable fashion, upcycling, mending, DIYs or any other ideas you may have! (100-300 words)
  • Write a short statement about yourself
  • Write a short description of the piece and the inspiration behind it (50-250 words).

How to Enter Photo Submissions:

  • Select 1-3 photos of your project making sure they clearly show the piece (100 MB or smaller)
  • Write a short description of yourself and why you’re interested in participating in this zine!
  • Write a short description of the piece and the inspiration behind it (50-250 words).

Not sure what to submit? Here are a few prompts if you need one:

  • How do you upcycle, fix, build, or revive old things?
  • How do you fulfill your needs without feeding capitalism and consumerism?
  • What are some creative ways you reduce waste?

The submission deadline is June 26th. To submit, use the Google form at the bottom of this page. Selected submissions will be collected into a zine for future Free Market events and will receive an honorarium of $50! If you have questions or want to pitch other ideas feel free to contact us at .
